Faculty Awards & Achievements
Marguerite
Neita, Ph.D.,
associate professor of Clinical Laboratory Science, was chosen by the University's Teaching, Learning, and Technology Committee as the winner of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Assessment’s 2007 Teaching with Technology Award. As a part of her successful effort to
build a distance-learning (DL) program, Neita
harnessed the Blackboard course management
system to bring together online and on-site
students enrolled in CLLS 101: Introduction to
Clinical Laboratory Science. Within the CLLS
Blackboard site, Neita created a
student-centered learning space via interactive
PowerPoint case studies, hyperlinks to animation
and videotapes, discussion board forums,
interviews with professionals, self-scoring
quizzes, and group poster projects. Anonymous
evaluations and the group posters confirmed that
the course fulfilled its objectives and that
students appreciated the learning experience. Neita
will present her award-winning course to faculty
on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 12 – 2 p.m., during
her guest lecture “Developing a
Distance-Learning Program.” To attend, RSVP to
cetla@howard.edu.

Associate
Professor Charles Kim, Ph.D.,
and Professor John Tharakan, Ph.D., both
earned CETLA’s Honorable Mention distinction for
their use of instructional technology in the
School of Engineering. Kim introduced Tablet PCs
and an interface card to turn the traditional
engineering lecture into “a dynamic teaching
studio with drawings and scribbles, and instant
experimental verification of theories and
concepts.” Tharakan integrated Blackboard
technology, a textbook CD, and POLYMATH software
to enhance learning in a chemical reaction
engineering course.

Kirk Geter,
D.P.M., assistant
professor, College of Medicine and chief,
Division of Podiatry, was recently named
president-elect of The American College of Foot
and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine. His term
begins Jan. 1, 2008. In over 50 years of the
organization’s history, Geter will be the second
African American to serve as president.
