The Howard University Faculty Senate hosted a reception in the Blackburn Center Gallery Lounge to welcome new faculty and salute returning faculty members at the start of the academic year. The festive event, which included about 40 attendees, allowed faculty from different departments a chance to mingle and discuss the promising year ahead and to also meet Provost Richard English, Ph.D., as well as several deans. This was the first reception for new faculty hosted by the Faculty Senate and it will prove to be a lasting tradition.

“New faculty members should be introduced to the community, and we should let them know about the challenges ahead,” said Theodore Bremner, Ph.D., chair of the Faculty Senate. “There is a lot to be done and we should support them. We have a common destiny and common goals. It’s going to take a lot of work, but what’s life without challenges? We will work collectively and collaboratively.”

Provost English offered a welcome to the faculty and also offered his support to the Faculty

Senate saying, “We have some important work to do this year, I will work with the Faculty Senate to make that possible.”

New Faculty Senate Secretary Mercedes V. Tibbits, Ph.D., was also introduced. “The Faculty Senate owes a debt to [Tibbits],” said Bremner. “She’s a real dynamo.”
